PROCESS

My friend Jeff had the kind of look that made me want to pick up my paintbrush. He just had the style and the stance that was a painting. When Jeff came to the studio to for a sitting his girlfriend rummaged through my old clothes assembling a cowgirl outfit. She danced, he played guitar, and I painted her instead.

Cowgirls, the painting from that sitting is a glimpse into the multifaceted realties of women.   Often over dramatized in my painting, I am interested in how women take ownership of their environments through emotional projections.   Each portrait is a precise moment in the creation of emotional drama

WORK IN PROGRESS

My current project, War Women , is a series of paintings of women workers on the home front during World War II. I was initially attracted to period photographs because of their depictions of strong, capable women. They symbolize a turning point in woman's' role in western society. To pay tribute to the connection between the generations I am contemporizing these images. One way to achieve this is by placing contemporary women into the historical images.   To assure the viewer understands this connection an exhibition catalog will explain the process used to insert currently living women into wartime factory work.
